Our exploration of Istanbul’s rich cultural scene extended beyond architectural wonders. We immersed ourselves in the art world by visiting the renowned Pera Museum, where we admired captivating exhibitions that showcased the city’s vibrant artistic heritage. Attending mesmerizing firework displays added a touch of excitement to our evenings, leaving us with lasting memories.

The trip was not just a sightseeing excursion; it was a comprehensive study-work experience that allowed us to learn from the unique architectural styles and techniques found in Istanbul. Soon after her graduation with masters from the Faculty of Architecture at the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Engineering, she joined the prestigious “Urban Planning” Department of the Institute of Architecture and Art at the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, where she has been contributing her expertise since 2020.

Leyla’s talents extend beyond architecture and urban planning. In 2021, she took the initiative to establish her own art school, where she shares her knowledge and teaches drawing and painting classes to aspiring artists. This endeavor not only showcases her artistic skills but also demonstrates her dedication to nurturing creativity in others.

Recognizing her immense talent, Leyla became a member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan in 2022, further solidifying her place among the esteemed artists of her country. Her artistic achievements have been celebrated through participation in numerous art exhibitions, allowing her work to be appreciated by a wider audience.

While Leyla’s artistic endeavors have brought her recognition, it is her recent achievement that has captured the attention of professionals in the field. Leyla has just published her first book, titled “Urban Planning Problems of the City of Shusha”. This significant milestone showcases her dedication to understanding and addressing the complex challenges faced by urban areas.

In her book, Leyla delves into the intricacies of urban planning, focusing specifically on the city of Shusha. By analyzing the urban landscape and considering factors such as infrastructure, cultural heritage, and sustainability, Leyla offers innovative solutions to the city’s urban planning issues. Her research not only highlights her knowledge and expertise but also contributes to the broader discourse on urban development.

Leyla’s multifaceted accomplishments as an architect, artist, and now author, make her a rising star in her field. Her passion for creating functional and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces, coupled with her artistic sensibilities, sets her apart. The competition program consisted of two stages:

• The first stage, held at the end of 2020, focused on the Ramana, Pirshagi, and Amirjan settlements, where our tender for the Ramana settlement was awarded with 3rd place. 

• The second stage, which commenced in May, centred on the Buzovna settlement.

‍

Competition Objectives

The primary objective of this stage was to determine the fundamental artistic style and environmental concept for the Buzovna settlement in Absheron. Our team’s innovative approach encompassed landscape planning solutions, architectural designs for streets and neighbourhoods, and considerations for improving the socio-economic conditions of the population. Moreover, this competition sought to actively involve architects, especially young professionals, in the country’s ongoing urban planning, restoration, and construction endeavours, thereby promoting public participation.

Proposed Solutions

We proposed a range of innovative solutions in our projects, aimed at enhancing the Buzovna settlement and creating a more attractive environment for both local residents and foreign tourists. These solutions included incorporating a significant amount of greenery and utilising natural or artificial materials in the design of characteristic public spaces within the settlement. We also suggested the installation of solar panels to promote sustainability and harness renewable energy sources.

Preserving the artistic style and composition of historic buildings, as well as protecting the facade openings, were important considerations in our projects. We recognized the significance of these architectural elements in maintaining the cultural heritage of the area. Additionally, we aimed to increase the settlement’s appeal to foreign tourists and improve the tourism infrastructure to support their needs.

To address traffic congestion, our projects proposed the implementation of regular parking schemes, the strategic layout of existing roads, and the creation of dedicated areas for alternative modes of transportation, such as sidewalks and green spaces. We emphasized the importance of pedestrian and bicycle lanes to promote sustainable mobility and reduce reliance on private cars.

Evaluation Criteria

During the evaluation process, the projects were assessed based on various criterias. These included comprehensive studies and analysis of the settlement’s history, daily life, and climate. The connection with the historical context, the originality and integrity of the project concept, the practicality of the proposed structure, and the architectural features were also evaluated. The artistic-graphic presentation of the projects played a significant role, as did the projects’ potential for promoting tourism and establishing a well-defined tourist route.

Beginnings

In 2007, Rena Novruzlu and her co-founder established Afshan Studio, driven by a shared vision and a strong friendship. They embarked on a journey to create an architecture and design company that would leave a lasting impact on the industry.

In 2016, the founders mutually decided to part ways, marking a significant moment of change. While we initially continued under the old brand identity, it became evident that a new chapter was on the horizon.

Over recent years, our firm has experienced growth, and we’ve made our mark in four distinct market sectors: residential, commercial, hospitality, culture & education. We stood at the threshold of a transition, eager to reflect these changes.

The Birth of “Renee”

In 2021, as a symbol of rebirth and renewal, we introduced “Renee”, a new venture that represented not only a change in name but also a shift in our approach to architecture and design. This transition allowed us to reevaluate our identity, refine our vision, and adapt to the evolving demands of the industry.

Our mission is to focus on forward-thinking design. When we design for the future, our clients become our collaborators, our community inspires us, and each project is guided by a shared intention to shape the future we envision.

Our vision is a world that prioritizes people. In this future, design is responsive to people’s needs, centers communities, supports the environment, and respects the planet.

Capturing Our Firm’s Character

Alongside language, we needed to be able to express who we are visually as well. For us, this started with our logo, and our logo started with our name. 

The logo manages to capture so much of our firm’s character by incorporating different elements simultaneously.

The boldness and steadiness of the font is a testament to our trustworthiness, loyalty, motivation, and professionality. While the gentle and organic contours represent our human-centred approach, creativity, and empathy.

The dynamic interplay between the logo’s elements and the negative space it encompasses draws inspiration from the foundational architectural principle of balancing solidity with voids.

The brand colors aren’t just eye candy; they’re a story in hues. Fiery red echoes our passion and drive, making a bold statement in the design arena. Deep blue speaks volumes about our trustworthiness and professional depth, like a calm sea hiding intricate depths beneath the surface. Then there’s beige, a warm hug of approachability and human-centric design. Together, they’re our way of saying we’re the perfect blend of passion and professionalism, creativity and stability.

Our new brand’s internal reception has been resoundingly positive. The new colors, messaging, typefaces, and icon shapes open up a world of possibilities, and not just in marketing materials. We have seen the colors used to elevate site plans and differentiate organizational categories. The brand messaging has helped us to describe to new employees what drives our firm and where we place value.‍

A Dynamic and Representative Website

The logo and brand messaging informed our approach to our new website, both in feel and functionality. We carried our firm’s foundational elements into the digital space, from our site navigation to an aesthetic that we can confidently say is uniquely us.

We are a firm of thought leaders who are active in our communities and passionate about our work. Our vision for our new website was an intuitive site that gave us the room to dive deeper into our design process, project stories, and firm values. We developed an expressive, dynamic website that represents Renee Architecture & Design today and will allow us to grow into tomorrow.

The process to rebrand has been valuable not just in the result, but in the discoveries we’ve made along the way. As the adage goes, sometimes it’s more about the journey than the destination (although we are really excited about the destination). We’re still the same firm – putting people first and driving the design forward – only now we have a brand to match.
