Influenced by the rich cultural heritage of Baku and the desire to create a unique dining experience, our interior design project for Malakan Restaurant in the heart of the city was driven by a careful blend of tradition and modernity. Through extensive research and insightful discussions with the client, we aimed to transform the conventional heavy atmosphere typically found in traditional restaurants into a more vibrant and contemporary space. Additionally, the unique challenge of the project site, an underground location with only a direct entrance from the ground floor, presented its own set of obstacles that required innovative solutions.

Overcoming the challenges posed by the project site, the interior design of the restaurant effectively embodies the conceptual vision behind the project. Upon entering the direct ground-floor entrance, guests are led into an inviting space that defies expectations. The design team took advantage of the limited natural light by incorporating strategic lighting fixtures and reflective surfaces, creating an illusion of openness and brightness. Notably, faux stained glass windows adorned with traditional ornaments were introduced, complemented by strategically placed lighting fixtures. This clever illusion creates the feeling of outdoor lighting, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Spatial Planning

To maximize the underground space, careful attention was given to spatial organization. The layout was thoughtfully planned to optimize the available area, ensuring efficient circulation and a comfortable dining experience for guests. This required innovative utilization of partitions, cleverly positioned furniture, and the strategic placement of design elements to create visually distinct dining areas.

Color Palette

The chosen color palette played a vital role in enhancing the overall ambiance. Warm earthy tones dominated the space, evoking a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Vibrant colors were strategically placed to add visual interest and liveliness, creating a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity.

Textures and Materials

Carefully selected textures and materials contributed to the tactile experience of the restaurant. Rich golden finishes, intricate carvings, and woven fabric patterns provided a tactile connection to traditional aesthetics. At the same time, sleek metal accents and glossy surfaces introduced a contemporary touch, further blending the elements of tradition and modernity, as well as to enhance the perceived brightness and prevent the space from feeling enclosed.
